What Really Happens to Your VCE Exam?
Markers, predicted grades, score checks and what happens if something looks wrong
YOU PUT YOUR PEN DOWN. THEN WHAT?
Students spend months preparing for VCE exams, but most have very little idea what happens after the paper leaves the exam room.
1 How is my exam actually marked?
2 Can a weak mock or indicative grade pull down my real exam result?
3 What happens if my final result looks unexpectedly low?
4 Can I see my exam after results are released?
5 Can a genuine marking error be reviewed?
THE BIG IDEA
Your exam does not disappear into a black box. VCAA has marking, checking and post-results review processes.
Verified against current VCAA 2026 external assessment and results guidance.

1. HOW IS MY VCE EXAM ACTUALLY MARKED?
At least two assessors independently mark VCE external assessments.
At least TWO assessors independently mark all externally assessed tasks. If required, discrepancy marking is then completed by an additional assessor
WHY DO SOME GRADED DISTRIBUTION REPORTS SHOW DOUBLE MARKS FOR THE FINAL EXAM?
Because assessor scores are combined, some VCAA grade-distribution reports show totals that are double the face-value marks on the paper. For example, a 120-mark exam may appear as 240 assessor marks.

Example: VCAA grade-distribution table.
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR STUDENTS
One examiner does not simply decide your entire result.
Make the response you want credited visible and readable.
Do not rely on the assessor guessing what you meant.

2. I BOMBED MY MOCK. CAN MY PREDICTED GRADE PULL DOWN MY REAL EXAM?
No, but schools do use indicative grades as part of VCAA quality assurance.
YOUR INDICATIVE GRADE DOES NOT CAP, REPLACE OR AUTOMATICALLY PULL DOWN YOUR ACTUAL EXAM SCORE.
Schools submit an indicative grade before the examination period. For 2026 written examinations, the deadline is 8 October.
HOW DO SCHOOLS USUALLY ARRIVE AT IT?
In many schools, SAC performance and the student's rank within the cohort are major reference points.
VCAA specifically lists ranking students by performance in school-based assessments as one acceptable strategy. Schools may also use:
a practice / mock examination
prior knowledge of the student's relative ability
WHAT IT IS FOR
Quality assurance
Indicative grades help VCAA identify possible anomalous marking and are also used in derived examination score calculations.
WHAT ABOUT MOCKS?
Useful, but not the whole picture.
A mock may contribute, but schools can combine it with SAC performance, cohort ranking and teacher knowledge.

3. WHAT IF MY FINAL EXAM RESULT LOOKS UNUSUAL?
VCAA has an anomalous-result checking process for most external assessments.
Before final results are issued, VCAA identifies certain statistically significant unexpected results. For most external assessments, the Chief Assessor can review a flagged assessment.

After this final check, a score may go up or stay the same -it will not go down because of that check.
4. AFTER RESULTS
CAN I SEE WHAT HAPPENED?
STATEMENT OF MARKS
Marks by question/criterion and maximum marks available.
INSPECTION
View the written response at school. 15 minutes per 2026 written exam.

5. CAN A MARKING ERROR BE REVIEWED?
Yes - but 'I expected a higher score' is not enough.
For written examinations, a score review is for a specific alleged marking error - not a general request to have the whole paper marked again.
Statement of Marks
Inspect response with the subject teacher

WHAT CAN COUNT AS A MARKING ERROR?
A correct answer, or part of an answer, appears not to have received marks.
A response, or part of a response, appears not to have been considered.
The mark appears to reflect an unreasonable application of professional judgment.
WHAT THIS MEANS IN THE EXAM
Write in the correct response area.
If you use extra writing space, clearly indicate where the answer continues. Make working and
explanations legible enough to assess.
Do not rely on the assessor inferring an idea that you have not clearly written or interpreting
an ambiguous response.
THE ASSESSOR CAN ONLY MARK WHAT IS ACTUALLY ON THE PAGE.
