The September Holiday: Same Break, Different Goal
September Holidays
Year 12 students are moving into mock and external exam preparation. Year 11 students still have time to consolidate before end-of-year exams.
WHY THIS BREAK MATTERS
Year 12: use the holidays to test what happens under exam conditions, then fix what the mock exposes.
Year 11: use the holidays to make earlier topics usable again before exam preparation becomes more intense.
YEAR 12 - MOCK READY
Timed sections, VCAA-style questions, examiner reports and a plan for what to repair after the mock.
YEAR 11 - BUILD THE BASE
Revisit previous topics, practise recall and introduce exam-style questions without turning every session into a full exam.
YEAR 12 EXAM ORDER
27 Oct: English | 30 Oct: Psychology + General 1 | 2 Nov: Biology + General 2 5-6 Nov: Methods | 9-11 Nov: Specialist | 10 Nov: Chemistry | 12 Nov: Physics
Holiday goal: finish each study session with something solved, applied, checked or improved.

Mathematical Methods
MATHEMATICAL METHODS
Recognise the trigger, not just the formula.
YEAR 12 NOW
Use mixed and timed questions now. Notice which questions you cannot start quickly and why.
YEAR 11 NOW
Keep algebra, functions and calculus skills active. Build towards exam-style questions gradually.
A USEFUL HOLIDAY SESSION COULD LOOK LIKE THIS
Rebuild one topic from memory: key graphs, formulas and the meaning behind them.
1 Active recall
Complete questions from several topics so the method is not obvious from the exercise heading.
2 Mixed practice
Spend time on one non-routine question. Ask: what clue should have told me which method to use?
3 One hard question
Correct the question, close the solution, then try it again from the beginning.
4 Reattempt

Specialist Mathematics
SPECIALIST MATHEMATICS
Understand how the ideas connect.
YEAR 12 NOW
Prioritise multi-step and non-routine problems under time pressure. Practise deciding the pathway independently.
YEAR 11 NOW
Keep up with current chapters, but revisit the hardest earlier material so it does not disappear before exams.
A USEFUL HOLIDAY SESSION COULD LOOK LIKE THIS
Write the important result or process from memory instead of only reading it.
1 Re-derive
Complete a small set where several skills must be combined in one solution.
2 Multi-step set
Choose one question that is not immediately obvious and stay with it long enough to understand the structure.
3 Challenge problem
Finish by stating which ideas were connected and what signalled the method.
4 Explain the link

General Mathematics
GENERAL MATHEMATICS
Accuracy is part of the content.
YEAR 12 NOW
Use timed VCAA-style sets. Practise calculator speed, bound-reference use and interpretation under pressure.
YEAR 11 NOW
Build accuracy now. Make sure finance, data, matrices and networks remain usable before full exam revision begins.
A USEFUL HOLIDAY SESSION COULD LOOK LIKE THIS
Use the calculator and bound reference for a few short tasks so common processes are fast.
1 Quick warm-up
Complete a short mixed set without stopping to check every answer immediately.
2 Timed set
Check rounding, units, labels, calculator entry and interpretation wording.
3 Audit the marks
Redo the questions where the mathematics was basically right but the final mark was lost.
4 Fix the one-mark losses

Chemistry
CHEMISTRY
Connect theory, calculations and explanation.
YEAR 12 NOW
Move into mixed exam questions. Use mocks to find whether the weakness is content, calculation or explanation.
YEAR 11 NOW
Revisit earlier Unit 2 topics so you can recall without needing to reopen the chapter notes.
A USEFUL HOLIDAY SESSION COULD LOOK LIKE THIS
Explain one reaction, process or relationship without notes.
1 Recall the concept
Complete a small set of calculations and show the working clearly.
2 Calculate
Use the same concept in a data, experiment or unfamiliar scenario question.
3 Apply
Check the marking guide, then rewrite only the part that cost the mark.
4 Mark and repair

Physics
PHYSICS
Start with the situation, then choose the physics.
YEAR 12 NOW
Practise unfamiliar scenarios and timed problem solving. A mock should reveal where reasoning breaks down under pressure.
YEAR 11 NOW
Build the habit of diagram -> principle -> equation -> interpretation before exam pressure arrives.
A USEFUL HOLIDAY SESSION COULD LOOK LIKE THIS
Sketch the situation and identify what is changing before choosing an equation.
1 Draw first
Complete a familiar calculation with units, direction and clear working.
2 Standard problem
Choose a question where the physics is hidden inside a new context.
3 Unfamiliar application
Finish with one sentence explaining what the calculated result means physically.
4 Explain the answer

Biology
BIOLOGY
Retrieve the process, then apply it.
YEAR 12 NOW
Practise stimulus and data questions now. Use the mock exam to test whether your terminology and explanations survive time pressure.
YEAR 11 NOW
Strengthen the major processes and relationships first, then begin combining topics in exam-style questions.
A USEFUL HOLIDAY SESSION COULD LOOK LIKE THIS
Write or draw one biological process from memory.
1 Recall
Explain the process in a logical order using precise biological terminology.
2 Sequence
Answer a question that changes the organism, condition, experiment or data.
3 Apply
Check whether each mark has a clear point. Improve vague wording rather than rewriting everything.
4 Mark by marks

Psychology
PSYCHOLOGY
Know the concept, then prove you can use it.
YEAR 12 NOW
Combine scenario application, research methods and extended-response practice before mocks.
YEAR 11 NOW
Build accurate terminology and application first. Research methods should be practised alongside the relevant content.
A USEFUL HOLIDAY SESSION COULD LOOK LIKE THIS
Use flashcards or blank-page recall for key terms and distinctions.
1 Retrieve
Immediately use those concepts in unfamiliar scenarios instead of stopping at definitions.
2 Apply
Complete one short research-method or data question in the same session.
3 Research methods
Choose one lost-mark response and improve it until every required point is explicit.
4 Rewrite to full marks

English
ENGLISH
Plan, write, refine.
YEAR 12 NOW
Move toward timed section practice and use teacher feedback before mocks. Full essays do not need to be the only form of revision.
YEAR 11 NOW
Build stronger planning, evidence selection and paragraph writing before increasing timed work closer to exams.
A USEFUL HOLIDAY SESSION COULD LOOK LIKE THIS
Take several prompts and quickly decide your main argument or ideas for each.
1 Prompt bank
Choose one prompt and organise the evidence before writing.
2 Plan one
Write one strong paragraph or one timed section rather than a full essay every session.
3 Write selectively
Choose one recurring teacher comment and rewrite specifically to improve that skill.
4 Use feedback

Next Steps
WHAT TO DO AFTER THE MOCK AND BEFORE YEAR 11 EXAMS
The next step should come from what the exam revealed, not from simply doing another paper.
YEAR 12 - AFTER THE MOCK
Choose only three priorities:
- One content gap
- something you genuinely did not know.
- One application problem
- you knew the content but could not use it.
- One exam-condition problem
- timing, interpretation, structure or careless error.
Work on those before the next full paper.
YEAR 11 - USE THE EXAM AS A REHEARSAL
Build towards the exam over the next several weeks: - keep the revision of previous topics active every week - add exam-style questions before full timed papers - practise recalling material without notes - use the exam to learn how you handle time pressure and cumulative content
USE EXAMINER REPORTS
Do not only check the answer. Read why students lost marks, then ask whether the same weakness appears in your own work.
VCAA FIRST
Use official VCAA questions and reports to learn the expected style and standard. Use other external papers for extra volume.
