Which VCE Science Should I Choose?
Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Physics and Psychology explained
Choosing a VCE Science is easier when students compare their interests, learning style, workload and future pathways. The best choice is not always the highest-scaling, easiest-sounding or most popular subject.
Important starting point
Every VCE Science requires evidence, data interpretation, investigation skills and clear scientific communication. A subject can also prepare students for university without being a formal prerequisite.
At a glance
Biology
Living systems, processes and applied writing.
Chemistry
Calculations, patterns and practical work.
Environmental Science
Real-world issues, data and evaluation.
Physics
Algebra, models and pr oblem-solving.
Psychology
Behaviour, research and scenario application.
Five questions to ask before choosing
Your interests and strengths
- Which Science topics genuinely interest you?
- Do you prefer calculations, detailed content, investigations or case studies?
- What were your strongest areas in Year 10 Science?
Your pathway and workload
- Does a future course require or recommend the subject?
- Will it create a balanced workload that you can sustain?

- you can use precise scientific terminology
- you can interpret diagrams, experiments and data
Think carefully if...
- you dislike detailed terminology and exact wording
- you rely on memorising without understanding
- you find unfamiliar data and ethics questions difficult
How to succeed in Biology
- learn processes as linked causes and effects
- use VCAA command terms accurately
- practise data and unfamiliar-scenario questions
Common misconception
“Biology is mainly about memorisation.”
Students must do more than recall facts. They must apply concepts, analyse evidence and explain processes precisely.

2 VCE Chemistry
Matter, reactions, quantitative reasoning and chemical analysis.
Chemistry explains the structure, properties and reactions of matter at observable and particle levels.
Relevant pathways
Medicine; pharmacy and pharmaceutical science; biomedical science; dentistry; veterinary science; laboratory science; chemical engineering.
What will you study?
- atomic structure and bonding
- reactions and quantitative chemistry
- fuels and energy
- acids, bases and equilibrium
- organic and analytical chemistry
Is Chemistry a good fit?
- you enjoy calculations and scientific theory
- you can rearrange formulae and work with units
- you will practise multi-step problems regularly
Think carefully if...
- you avoid mathematics or formula rearrangement
- you struggle to connect several concepts
- you expect calculations alone to earn high marks
How to succeed in Chemistry
- strengthen algebra and unit conversion
- connect calculations to particle explanations
- practise questions that combine several topics
Common misconception
“Chemistry is mostly calculations, so explanations matter less.”
Chemistry requires both numeracy and scientific writing. Students must explain reactions, interpret evidence and support conclusions with chemical language.
